The Huskies were rolling in the opening game of the doubleheader, as they smoked the Dragons by a final score of 8-3. In fact, St. Cloud State wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first, as the team took an early 1-0 lead thanks to a leadoff single from Morgan Emmans (Blaine, Minn. / Mounds Park Academy) and an RBI groundout from Megan Conrads (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South). However, MSU-Moorhead answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the first to even the score at 1-1.
Fortunately, it was the Huskies who would score the majority of the runs over the course of the next six innings, as they added one in the third, one in the fourth, one in the sixth and four in the seventh en route to their 8-3 victory. In the third, Cassie Francesconi (Schomberg, Ont. / Emily Carr Secondary) scored easily on an RBI single from Emmans to regain the lead for St. Cloud State at 2-1 before Alexis Jacobs (Woodbury, Minn. / Woodbury) extended the lead to 3-1 thanks to a bunt single in the top of the third.
The Huskies eventually extended the lead to 4-1 in the sixth thanks to another RBI hit from Jacobs. With a three-run lead, it looked like first year starter Sydney LaPoint (Green Bay, Wis. / Bay Port) would cruise to her sixth victory of the year. However, the first year ran into problems in the bottom of the inning, as the Dragons scored two runs to cut St. Cloud State's lead to 4-3 with one inning remaining in the game.
It was no harm no foul for the Huskies, though, as they went ahead and scored four insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Alexandra Pinkowski (Prior Lake, Minn. / Prior Lake) kicked things off with a leadoff home run, her second of the year, to bolster the St. Cloud State lead to 5-3. Emmans then reached base on a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a bunt single by Maya Keating (Wheaton, Ill. / Warrensville-Wheaton) and scored on an RBI single from Jasmin Estrada (Litchfield, Minn. / Litchfield) to extend the lead to 6-3.
With no outs on the board, the Huskies went ahead and scored two more runs to take the definitive 8-3 lead over MSU-Moorhead. Lauren Kirchberg (Columbus, Wis. / Columbus) went ahead and made it official, as she pitched a perfect 1-2-3 inning to secure the 8-3 victory.
LaPoint earned her sixth win of the season in her 19th appearance on the mound. In 5.1 innings pitch, the first year gave up three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts.
Keating was the top hitter forS St. Cloud State, as she went 3-4 with one run, while Emmans, Brooke Bowlin (Chaska, Minn. / Holy Family) and Jacobs all went 2-3 at the plate. Additionally, Jacobs tallied a team-leading three RBI in the victory.
Game two did not get off to the greatest start for the Huskies, as the Dragons took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. MSU-Moorhead then added three runs in the second, extending its lead to 3-0 over St. Cloud State. However, the Huskies certainly weren't out of the game, as they cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the third thanks to an RBI single from Estrada.
After cutting the Dragons' lead to one run in the third, St. Cloud State's offense unleashed to score four in the fourth to go up 6-3. Raven Vanden Langenberg (Seymour, Wis. / Seymour) scored the game-tying run in the top of the inning on an error by the MSU-Moorhead first baseman before Emmans gave the team its first lead of the game at 5-3 with an RBI single down the left field line.
Pinkowki scored the Huskies fourth run of the inning when Conrads hit a grounder to the first baseman, extending the lead to 6-3. St. Cloud State then added two in the fifth on a suicide squeeze from Francesconi and smart base running by Bowlin and five in the sixth to take a sufficient 13-3 lead over the Dragons.
MSU-Moorhead managed to stave off an early ending, as the home team scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Huskies lead to 13-6. St. Cloud State had already done enough damage to secure the victory, as Emma Murphy (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater_ sent the Dragons down in order in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the 13-6 lead for St. Cloud State.
Keating and Francesconi had outstanding days at the plate for the Huskies, as they combined for seven hits in eight at bats. Keating was 4-5 with two runs, while Francesconi went 3-3 with two runs and two RBI for St. Cloud State. Vaden Langenberg was 3-4 with three runs and two RBI.
Kirchberg earned her third win of the season in game two, as she pitched 3.1 innings and gave up just two runs on two hits with two strikeouts.
With the sweep, the Huskies overall record improves to 27-11 and they are now 9-5 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play. St. Cloud State will return to action this weekend, as the team hosts two more back-to-back NSIC doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday. The Huskies will open the weekend with Concordia-St. Paul Saturday and will face Minnesota State on Sunday.
