St. Cloud State Softball Splits Conference Opener with UMD

Huskies defeat Bulldogs 3-1 in game one, fall 4-0 in game two
ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The St. Cloud State softball team (16-11, 1-1 NSIC) split their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener with Minnesota Duluth Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies defeated the Bulldogs 3-1 in game one before falling 4-0 in game two.
GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE (3) VS MINNESOTA DULUTH (1)
It was a battle between two pitchers in game one of the double-header as SCSU only gave up one run while UMD gave up three. Minnesota Duluth would get the first run of the game in the top of the second as a single up the middle gave the runner the opportunity to score going up 1-0 over SCSU. St. Cloud State's defense held off the Bulldogs for the rest of the game, but the offense couldn't get anything going until the bottom of the fourth. With two runners on base, Josey Marquette smoked a double to the right center, sending Jamie Odlum and Jasmin Estrada home to put the Huskies up 2-1. One inning later, Estrada singled past the center fielder while Sydney Trees ran home for the 3-1 score. Trinity Junker put in work in the circle as she struck out eight batters with one earned run improving to 10-3 on the season.
GAME TWO: ST. CLOUD STATE (0) VS MINNESOTA DULUTH (4)
The Huskies struggled to generate offense as Minnesota Duluth's Lauren Dixon put up a solid front in the circle. The pitcher only gave up three hits with zero runs in seven innings. The Bulldogs would strike first in the third going up 1-0 until they increased the lead to 3-0 an inning later. UMD would add one more run in the fifth for the 4-0 score. Raven Vanden Langenberg went 1-for-2 with a double while Maggie Fitzgerald went 2-for-3. Justyce Porter struck out three batters with three earned runs in five innings while Lauren Kirchberg came in for relief striking out one in two innings.

The Huskies will head to North Dakota for a pair of conference double-headers. The Huskies will travel to Minot, ND for a double-header with UMary on April 1 before facing Minot State on April 2 in a double-header.
