Huskies fall 2-1 & 3-1 in series
MARSHALL, Minn. - The St. Cloud State softball team (25-16, 10-6 NSIC) was swept on the road in their series with Southwest Minnesota State (14-25, 9-11 NSIC) Sunday afternoon. A tough duel between pitchers was lost 2-1 in nine innings in game one while an early lead by SMSU in game two sealed a 3-1 loss.
GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE (1) VS SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE (2)
The game opened with three blanked innings until Southwest Minnesota State struck first in the fourth inning off an error for a 1-0 lead over SCSU. The Huskies tied things up at one apiece thanks to a shot in center field by Raven Vanden Langenberg sending Sydney Trees home in the sixth. In the seventh, with a runner on third and two outs, St. Cloud State was looking to take the lead, but the Mustangs pitcher got the best of the batter ending the inning with a strikeout.
With the score stilled at 1-1, the game would be sent to extra innings. In the eighth, the Huskies were looking to jump on top with a runner on third but with two outs down, a ground out to third would continue the game. The Mustangs would take the game in the ninth inning as a single to left was able to send their runner home.
From the circle, Trinity Junker struck out nine batters while allowing seven hits with two runs, three walks, an error, and one earned run. Vanden Langenberg went 1-for-3 batting in the Huskies only RBI of the game.
GAME TWO: ST. CLOUD STATE (1) VS SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE (3)
Southwest Minnesota State took an early 2-0 lead, scoring in the first and second inning before going up 3-0 in the fourth. The Huskies struggled offensively to generate runs through the first five innings. St. Cloud State's lone run of the game came in the sixth inning as Jasmin Estrada grounded out to short, giving Trees the opportunity to score.
