St. Cloud State softball picks up key NSIC win over Augustana

The St. Cloud State University softball team (33-16, 19-9 NSIC) scored an important doubleheader split against NSIC rival Augustana University (35-11, 17-5 NSIC) on Saturday, April 28 at Selke Field in St. Cloud, Minn. The Huskies lost a close 3-0 decision in game one before rallying to collect a 2-1 victory in game two against the regionally ranked Vikings.
The Huskies will now complete their 2018 regular season on Sunday, April 29 with a 1 p.m. home doubleheader against Wayne State College at Selke Field.
In SCSU's first outdoor home games of the 2018 season, the Huskies trailed by a 1-0 score after three innings of play in the second game. In the bottom of the fourth inning, SCSU staged its comeback with an RBI single by Morgan Emmans that scored teammate Megan Conrads to tie the game. Emmans was then brought across the plate for the eventual game winner by a double off the bat of Brooke Bowlin that made the tally 2-1.
The Huskies' defense went on to play shutout ball the final four innings of the game to gain the win. SCSU pitcher Bradi Yost went the distance in th game with four hits allowed, one run allowed and one strikeout in 7.0 innings pitched. This was Yost's ninth victory of the season and it improves her record to 9-1. SCSU outhit the Vikings 6-4 in the game. Alexis Jacobs had two hits to pace SCSU, while Conrads, Emmans, Bowlin and Maya Keating all had hits for SCSU.
In the first game, Augustana scored runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead in the game. AU added one more run in the fifth to make the final 3-0 as it outhit SCSU 6-4 in the game. Kate Kopeck started the game and went one inning before Kylie Thomsen completed the game with 6.0 innings of work that included four strikeouts and just five hits allowed.
The win helped keep the Huskies in fourth place in the current NSIC standings. The victory was also key since Augustana was currently ranked #4 in the latest NCAA DII Regional poll, while the Huskies were ranked eighth in the latest NCAA regional poll.
