Home runs help Huskies gain doubleheader split against CSP

The St. Cloud State University softball team (21-12, 7-5 NSIC) used the power of a pair of solo home runs in the fourth inning to help gain a doubleheader split against Concordia-St. Paul (19-15, 4-8 NSIC) on Saturday, April 7 in the SCSU Husky Dome. The Golden Bears posted a 3-2 victory in game one of the doubleheader before SCSU rallied with a 3-1 win in the second game of the twinbill.
In that second game, SCSU broke open a 0-0 deadlock with a home run by Morgan Emmans in the fourth inning. The shot to left field was Emmans' team leading seventh of the year and it gave SCSU a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Kylie Thomsen pushed the SCSU lead to 2-0 with a shot over the right field fence, which was her third round tripper of the year.
SCSU added one more run for insurance in the fifth inning with a run scored by Cassie Francesconi, who was brought home on a RBI single by Alexis Jacobs.
On defense, Bradi Yost was impressive on the way to her first victory as a SCSU pitcher. In relief of starting pitcher Kate Kopeck, who suffered an injury in the first inning, Yost pitched 6.2 innings with one strikeout, five hits allowed and just one run allowed. CSP's lone run in the game wasn't scored until the bottom of the seventh inning before Yost shut the door with the final out and the win.
In the game, SCSU and CSP each had five hits apiece as Maya Keating, Anna Roth, Emmans, Thomsen and Jacobs all had one hit each for the Huskies.
To begin the day in the Dome, SCSU's Maya Keating scored the game's first run off of an error by CSP in the first inning. CSP replied with one run each in the second and third innings to make it 2-1. The Golden Bears scored one more run in the fifth inning before the Huskies' ended the game's offense with a run in the top of the seventh. Emmans doubled in the seventh and was brought around on a single by Megan Conrads to make the final 3-2.
Thomsen was the pitcher of record in game one with 6.0 IP, one strikeout and seven hits allowed. Aryka Knoche scored the victory for CSP with 7.0 IP, four hits and one run allowed.
Of note, both of the games vs. CSP were originally scheduled to be played in St. Paul. The site was reverse to the Husky Dome due to the cold and snowy conditions (SCSU was the away team in both games).
The Huskies will continue their 2018 season on April 11 with a doubleheader in the Husky Dome against Bemidji State. Admission is free for these NSIC games.
