ST. CLOUD, MINN. – St. Cloud State University softball's senior catcher Morgan Emmans (Blaine, Minn. / Mounds Park Academy) said at the beginning of the season "when the 'skies get hot, we're tough to be."
Safe to say her team proved her point yet again Tuesday afternoon, as the Huskies improved to 22-10 on the year and 4-4 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play thanks to a sweep of Bemidji State University. In a site reversal played in the Husky Dome, St. Cloud State took the opener 12-0 before eking out the 2-1 win in game two.
As the away team, the St. Cloud State bats took a while to warm up in the cold dome, but once they got going, there was no stopping the Huskies. St. Cloud State tacked on four runs in the top of the third to take an early 4-0 lead over the visiting (but not really) Beavers. Cassie Francesconi (Schomberg, Ont. / Emily Carr Secondary) recorded the team's first hit of the afternoon in style, as she sent the softball over the fence in right center to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the inning. From there, Alexis Jacobs (Woodbury, Minn. / Woodbury) and Brooke Bowlin (Chaska, Minn. / Holy Family) would score on an RBI single from Megan Conrads (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South) before Conrads herself scored on a scorching RBI double by Jasmin Estrada (Litchfield, Minn. / Litchfield) to give St. Cloud State the early 4-0 lead.
The Huskies would add a single run in the top of the fifth, as Bowlin carded her second inside the park home run, flying around the bases in seconds flat to give St. Cloud State a 5-0 lead. It was the sixth inning when the Huskies would do serious damage to the scoreboard thanks RBIs from Raven Vanden Langenberg (Seymour, Wis. / Seymour) and Jacobs. The real highlight, though, was provided by Estrada, whose grand slam with no outs secured the final 12-0 score for St. Cloud State.
Kate Kopeck (Lumsden, Sask. / Lumsden) and Lauren Kirchberg (Columbus, Wis. / Columbus) combined for the two-hit shutout, as they held Bemidji State to just two hits in six scoreless innings of work. Kopeck earned her 11th win of the season, as she gave up just one hit while striking out four in five innings of work. Kirchberg then closed out the game in the bottom of the sixth, as she surrendered just one hit to the Beavers in her one inning of work.
Game two proved to be just as thrilling as the first and cruised along just as quickly. It was as though Kylie Thomsen (Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove) and Rochelle Koshalek were on a mission to pitch the fastest seven-inning game in the NSIC this season. The two pitchers may have done just that, as the second game was a quick one hour and 23 minutes long and featured an impressive 2-1 win by the Huskies.
St. Cloud State used small ball rather than the long ball to earn its second win of the day over Bemidji State. After two scoreless innings, the Huskies again scored in the top of the third and took a 2-0 lead over the Beavers. This time, it was Vanden Langenberg who jump started the scoring, as she reached base on a fielding error by Bemidji's third baseman before stealing second during Francesconi's at bat.
From there, things got a little weird. Francesconi hit a routine grounder to the shortstop, but with the speedy Vanden Langenberg on second, the Beaver hesitated just long enough, allowing Francesconi to reach base and Vanden Lagenberg to reach third. Then, Jacobs provided a clutch RBI sacrifice bunt, as Bemidji State's offense opted to throw the third baseman out at one rather than go for Vanden Langenberg at home.
After Vanden Langenberg gave the Huskies the 1-0 lead, Bowlin singled up the middle and Maya Keating (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton-Warrensville) reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases with one out for Conrads. The first baseman then hit a sacrifice fly deep in foul territory, allowing Francesconi to tag and easily score from second base for the 2-0 lead.
In the end, it proved those two runs in the third were enough for Thomsen and Sydney LaPoint (Green Bay, Wis. / Bay Port), who held the Beavers to just two hits and one run in seven innings of work. In fact, Thomsen made just one mistake in her four complete innings, as she gave up a solo home run to Bemidji's three-hitter Makayla Pagel to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Huskies had the opportunity to add a few insurance runs to their side of the scoreboard but proceeded to strand runners in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. The one-run lead was then enough for LaPoint, who only allowed to Beavers to reach base in three near perfect innings of relief. In fact, in the seventh, the first year sent Bemidji's five, six and seven batters down in order to secure the 2-1 win for the Huskies.
Multiple student-athletes had off the chart days on offense, as Bowlin, Conrads and Francesconi all went 2-3 with two runs in the opening game of the doubleheader. Estrada continued to dominate in the power numbers, as she went 2-4 with a grand slam and a team-leading five RBI in the first game of the day as well.
Bowlin and Conrads were also strong in game two, as they both batted .500 in the 2-1 win over the Beavers.
With the wins, St. Cloud State's overall record improves to 22-10 and the team is now 4-4 in NSIC play. The Huskies will look to keep their four-game win-streak alive this weekend when they host Minot State and Mary this upcoming Saturday and Sunday.
