Huskies shutout NSU 8-0 in game one, take game two 8-1
ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The St. Cloud State softball team (25-14, 10-4 NSIC) claimed their midweek series with Northern State (12-26, 6-12 NSIC) at the CSB Softball Field Tuesday morning. Top notch work in the circle and hot hitting led the Huskies to an 8-0 shutout in game one and a 8-1 victory in game two over the Wolves.
GAME ONE: ST. CLOUD STATE (8) VS NORTHERN STATE (0)
The Huskies shutout Northern State 8-0 off six hits with zero errors after five innings thanks to an impenetrable defense and solid hitting. St. Cloud State got things going in the first as Maggie Fitzgerald RBI singled to right field before reaching second on a wild throw. With two in scoring position, Jamie Odlum reached first on an error while Jasmin Estrada and Fitzgerald scored unearned for the 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Odlum tagged up on third off a sacrifice fly by Krueger for a 4-0 lead. Madison Spah would advance to third while Tenley Quesnell reached first on an error. Next up, the Huskies would go up 5-0 after a sacrifice fly by Sydney Trees sent Spah home. An RBI double to right center by Holly Weinberger would put the Huskies up 6-0 over Northern State.
St. Cloud State would score two unearned runs off an error in the field to end the game 8-0 after five. Emma Eickhoff was terrific in the circle striking out five batters while allowing only four hits and one walk for her first shutout of the season. Estrada went 2-for-3 with an extra base hit while Weinberger went 1-for-2 with one RBI and an extra base hit.
GAME TWO: ST. CLOUD STATE (8) VS NORTHERN STATE (1)
St. Cloud State grabbed the series sweep in game two 8-1 off 14 hits with two errors. Similar to game one, the Huskies got things rolling in the first. An error on Northern State would allow Raven Vanden Langenberg to reach first while Trees scored unearned. Next, an RBI triple by Estrada put SCSU up 2-0. The Wolves would get one back in the second off a walk, but the Huskies would end the inning leaving three NSU runners on base.
In the third, with the bases loaded Odlum's hit resulted in a fielder choice where Fitzgerald was thrown out at second but a wild toss by Northern State would advance runners with Vanden Langenberg making it home for a 3-1 lead. Next up, Lydia Krueger laid down a bunt that would bring Estrada home for a score. The Huskies would end the inning up 6-1 after an RBI by Gabrielle Nelson. The Huskies were looking to increase their lead in the fourth but a hit by Krueger would result in a fielder's choice closing it with three runners left on base. St. Cloud State added two more runs in the sixth off a Krueger RBI to right center and an RBI single to left field by Quesnell for the 8-1 victory.
Trinity Junker owned the circle through 4.1 innings, striking out seven batters while allowing only six hits, one run, and a walk.
