ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State's softball team (15-8, 1-1 NSIC) splits the team's first two conference games of the season against Minnesota Duluth (19-6, 1-1 NSIC) on Tuesday, March 27, at the Husky Dome. The program took the first game 2-0, but fell in the second game by a slim 1-0 margin.
Sophomore Alexis Jacobs had two hits and an RBI on the day. Junior Morgan Emmans totaled an RBI, double and a walk between the two contests. Freshman Haley McFarlane picked up a hit.
Freshman Kylie Thomsen (10-3) was the first game winner for SCSU in throwing her ninth complete game of the season. She surrendered just one hit in registering her second shutout of the campaign. The hit she allowed came with one out in the seventh inning.
Junior Kate Kopeck (5-4) was the tough-luck loser in the second contest for SCSU as she allowed just one run on five hits with seven strikeouts.
Game One
The Huskies scored their only runs of the game in the opening inning. Freshman Brooke Bowlin reached on a one-out walk. She stole second and raced around to score on a double from Emmans. Emmans moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Jacobs single to right to put SCSU ahead 2-0.
Thomsen allowed base runners in six of the seven innings, but never allowed the Bulldogs to break through as she scattered the nine walks she allowed plus the two errors that were committed behind her along with the hit.
UMD's best chance to score came in the sixth inning when Thomsen pitched herself out of a two-out bases loaded jam.
UMD's Valerie Hohol (8-3) took the loss in surrendering two runs and two walks in six innings worked.
Game Two
The second game was another pitcher's duel with only a total of six hits between the two teams in the contest.
UMD scored the only run of the game on Lauren Oberle's second inning lead-off home run.
The Huskies were held hitless until the seventh inning when Thomsen rapped a two-out sharp single to right field.
Breanna Swint (9-2) earned the win in surrendering just the one hit and two walks in throwing a complete game.
Next, St. Cloud State will be on the road and travels to Minot, N.D. to take on a pair of league opponents in the Air-Supported Dome. The program takes on the University of Mary on Friday, March 30, for a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. and Minot State on Saturday, March 31, for a pair of games starting at 2 p.m.
