Softball Takes Pair From the University of Mary On Friday

Minot, N.D. – St. Cloud State's softball team (17-8, 3-1 NSIC) swept both games of the conference doubleheader from the University of Mary (10-7, 1-3 NSIC) at the Air-Supported Dome in Minot on Friday, March 30. The program won the first game 4-2 and took the second contest 6-4.
Freshman Kylie Thomsen had three hits and an RBI on the day. Fellow freshman Brooke Bowlin also totaled three hits and an RBI. Senior Libby Bingham picked up pair of hits and walks plus an RBI. Junior Morgan Emmans recorded two hits and an RBI.
Thomsen (11-3) was the first game winner for SCSU in throwing her 10th complete game of the season. She surrendered five hits in registering her second win of the week
Junior Kate Kopeck (6-4) earned the victory in the second contest. She went the distance with six strikeouts.
Game One
The University of Mary scored first with a pair of runs in the opening inning of the day's opener. Madison McGonigal reached on a one-out walk and scored on Paige Matsuki's home run.
The Huskies wrestled the lead back with a three-spot in the fourth inning. Emmans started the rally with a lead-off single. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Alexis Jacobs. Thomsen followed with a single to move Emmans to third. Sophomore Anna Roth then drove in Emmans with a sacrifice fly. Freshman Megan Conrads doubled to left to move Thomsen to third. Conrads and Thomsen both scored on a muffed catch from the Mary first baseman.
SCSU finished off their scoring with a tally in the fifth inning. Jacobs reached on a two-out walk and scored on Thomsen's double to right field.
Mary's Madison Jahner (2-2) took the loss in surrendering four runs (two earned) and two walks in seven innings worked.
Game Two
St. Cloud State scored a run in the opening frame with Jacobs driving in sophomore Maya Keating with her base hit.
UMary wrestled the lead back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Colleen Crutchfield reached on a one-out single and scored on Emma Noble's home run.
SCSU tied the contest in the top of the third inning as Keating was able to score on a double play ball.
The Huskies took the lead in the top of the fourth inning with Keating driving in Roth.
SCSU added a single tally to the advantage in the fifth inning on a Bingham RBI single.
University of Mary made it a one-run game in the bottom of the frame on a Matsuki sacrifice fly to score Rebekkah Keller.
The sixth inning saw the Huskies added a pair of runs to the lead with Bowlin and Emmans picking up RBIs.
The Marauders finished off the scoring and made it a 6-4 game in the bottom of the sixth inning on an Kylie Alto solo home run to begin the frame.
The University of Mary threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh with Matsuki reaching on a two-out single and moving to second on a wild pitch. Kopeck stood strong though and induced a pop out to end the game and give SCSU the victory.
Brieann Backes (5-4) was tagged with the loss for the Marauders in allowing four runs (three earned) in 4.2 innings in the circle.
Next, St. Cloud State keeps the road trip going by staying in Minot, N.D. to take on Minot State in the Air-Supported Dome on Saturday, March 31, for a pair of games starting at 2 p.m.
