SCSU softball splits NSIC doubleheader against MSUM on April 17

The St. Cloud State University split a weekday doubleheader in the Husky Dome against visiting Minnesota State Moorhead on Tuesday, April 17. In game one, the Huskies rolled to a 9-1 victory that was decided by the 8-run rule in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the second game, MSUM rallied to gain an 8-2 win over the Huskies.
The split decision moves SCSU season record to 26-15, 12-8 NSIC and Minnesota State Moorhead is now 11-18, 4-8 NSIC in 2018. The Huskies will continue their 2018 campaign with scheduled games this weekend against Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls. In game one, the Dragons scored one run in the first inning before SCSU replied with a run scored by Alexis Jacobs on an RBI by Morgan Emmans. In the bottom of the second, SCSU broke open the scoring with a grandslam by reigning NSIC Player of the Week Haley McFarlane. The freshman from Iowa belted a shot over the right field fence that brought home Emmans, Jacobs and Libby Bingham.
In the fourth inning, SCSU pushed its lead to 7-1 with runs scored by Emmans and McFarlane. Brooke Bowlin added an RBI single in that inning for the Huskies. In the bottom of the fifth, SCSU wrapped it up early with a two RBI hit by Emmans that scored her teammates Jacobs and Bingham.
Bradi Yost was the pitcher of record for the Huskies with a complete game four-hitter that included four strikeouts and one run allowed. She is now 6-1 on the season for the Huskies. SCSU outhit the Dragons 12-4 in the contest. Emmans had three hits, three RBIs and two runs in the game, while McFarlane had four RBIs. Bingham and Jacobs each had two hits to help the SCSU cause.
In the nightcap, Moorhead charged to a 6-0 lead in the third inning before the Huskies' Emmans drove home Cassie Francesconi to make it 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth. SCSU added its second run of the game in the fourth inning with an RBI single by Anna Roth that scored Megan Conrads.
MSUM completed the offense with two more runs in the fifth to make the final 8-2. At the plate, MSUM outhit the Huskies 12-5 in the game. Kylie Thomsen was the pitcher of record for SCSU with 2.2 innings pitched. Yost and Emma Murphy combined in relief to complete the game for the Huskies.
