St. Cloud State softball splits twinbill against Northern State

The St. Cloud State University softball team (20-9, 6-2 NSIC) charted a doubleheader split against NSIC rival Northern State (14-12, 3-3 NSIC) on Wednesday, April 4 in St. Cloud, Minn.
The original game date was slated for April 3 but snowy road conditions moved the games to April 4 in St. Cloud State's spacious and climate controlled Husky Dome. SCSU scored a 2-1 victory in game one and then lost a 6-2 decision in game two against the Wolves.
To open the day, the Huskies broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with a run scored by Maya Keating. The Huskies loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh before Alexis Jacobs put the ball into play and reached first on an error by NSU. The play allowed all runners to move up, which produced the game winning run by Keating.
Northern State opened the game in the first inning with a solo run scored by Courtney Sjerven on a RBI from Jamie Fisher. The game then settled into a pitchers duel before SCSU got on the board in the fourth inning with a solo home run by starting pitcher Kylie Thomsen to make it 1-1.
Thomsen turned in a solid pitching performance for the Huskies with 6.1 innings of work that included four strikeouts, one run and only six hits allowed. Kate Kopeck picked up the victory in relief with one strikeout to her credit and no runs allowed in 0.2 innings of work. Jamie Fisher pitched 6.2 innings for NSU with four hits allowed, four strikeouts and two runs. SCSU compiled four hits and no errors in the game, while NSU had six hits and two errors.
In game two, NSU posted two runs in the first inning and added three more in the second to take a quick 5-0 lead. The Wolves and pitcher Fischer maintained the shutout until the fifth inning when the Huskies' Jacobs and pinch runner Allison Okeson scored runs with RBIs from Megan Conrads and Thomsen. NSU added one more run in the sixth inning to complete the scoring at 6-2. In the game, SCSU had six hits and one error, while NSU had eight hits and one error.
Kopeck was the pitcher of record for the Huskies with three strikeouts and eight hits allowed. Bradi Yost completed the game in relief for the Huskies with 1.0 innings pitched. Fischer was the winning pitcher for NSU with five strikeouts, six hits and two runs allowed.
