The Huskies wasted no time getting on the board in the first game against the Wildcats, as they scored seven runs in the opening frame. Megan Conrads (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South) continued her hot streak at the plate, as her three-run home run gave St. Cloud State the early 3-0 lead. Of course, Conrads wasn't the only Husky to homer in the first inning of the game. Raven Vanden Langenberg (Seymour, Wis. / Seymour) jacked a two-run home run of her own two batters later to extend the lead to 5-0 before Brooke Bowlin's (Chaska, Minn. / Holy Family) two out single made it a 7-0 game.
Wayne State did manage to score two runs off senior ace Kate Kopeck (Lumsden, Wis, / Lumsden) in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 7-2 after one inning of play. The Huskies, though, were simply not done scoring, as they tacked on three runs in the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth t. o secure the 13-5 victory. Jasmin Estrada (Litchfield, Minn. / Litchfield) and Alexis Jacobs (Woodbury, Minn. / Woodbury) both tallied homers through the game, while Bowlin again provided the game-winning RBI, as her fielder's choice in the top of the sixth scored Vanden Langenberg and ended the game early thanks to St. Cloud State 13-5, eight run advantage.
Things were a bit closer in the second game between the Huskies and Wildcats, at least through the first three innings of play. While St. Cloud State managed to take an early 1-0 lead in the first, this time courtesy of an Estrada RBI single, Wayne State answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning, evening the score at 1-1. The same thing happened in the second, as the Huskies jumped ahead 2-1, as Cassie Francesconi (Schomberg, Ont. / Emily Carr Secondary) scored on an RBI double from Jacobs. Like in the first, the Wildcats answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 2-2.
It looked like St. Cloud State took a definitive 4-2 lead in the top of the third, as the Huskies scored two runs on RBI bunts from Haley McFarlane (Swisher, Iowa / Cedar Rapids Prairie) and Vanden Langenberg. Another home run from Wayne State, though, was all the Wildcats needed to once again even the score at 4-4.
That was the last time Wayne State would score for a considerable amount of time, as St. Cloud State scored seven runs in the top of the fifth to take a definitive 11-5 lead over the Wildcats. The Huskies would tack on an insurance run in the top of the seventh, but the damage was already done, as a one-two-three seventh inning from Lauren Kirchberg (Columbus, Wis. / Columbus) secured the 12-5 lead for St. Cloud State.
Estrada and Bowlin both went 3-4 in the opening game against the Wildcats, while Conrads went 3-5 with a home run and team-leading four RBI. Estrada then proceeded to go 4-4 in game two with a home run, and two RBI.
Kopeck secured her 10th win of the season in game one, as she gave up five runs, four earned, and 11 hits in a full six innings of work. Kirchberg tallied the first win of her collegiate career Monday afternoon, as she gave up just one run on four hits in four innings of work.
With the sweep, the Huskies overall record improves to 20-10 and they are now 2-4 in NSIC play. St. Cloud State will continue its NSIC season on Tuesday, April 2 when the team hosts Bemidji State University at 1 and 3 p.m. in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The game will take place in the Husky Dome on St. Cloud State's campus.
