Softball Sweeps Clarion, 14-3, and Quincy, 5-4, On Monday at The Spring Games

Clermont, Fla. – St. Cloud State's softball team (14-7) earned a sweep on its final day of the Spring Games on Monday, March 12, in Clermont, Fla. The team defeated Clarion University (PA) by a 14-3 score and took care of Quincy University by a 5-4 margin.
Freshman Kylie Thomsen had five hits in the two games including a pair of doubles. Sophomore Maya Keating picked up three hits and four runs scored. Junior Morgan Emmans totaled three hits, a double, a home run and four RBIs. Freshman Brooke Bowlin had three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs plus a stolen base. Sophomore Alexis Jacobs recorded three hits and four RBIs.
Junior Kate Kopeck (5-3) earned the win in the first game of the day with five innings and three runs allowed (none earned) with a season-high seven strikeouts.
Thomsen (9-3) was the game two victor in going a complete game with four strikeouts.
Game One
The Huskies scored a single tally in the first as Jacobs knocked in Bowlin with a single.
The team exploded for seven runs in the second inning. Jacobs had the big hit of the inning with a three-run home run.
Clarion picked up a single tally in the bottom of the frame on a Jessica Carita RBI single.
SCSU poured in four more runs in the third inning with Emmans supplying a two-run home run in the frame.
The Huskies added a single tally to the advantage in the fourth inning with Bowlin having an RBI single.
The Golden Eagles plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth.
SCSU finished off the scoring with a single tally in the fifth inning on a wild pitch to make the final margin 14-3.
Clarion's Sarah Gossard (1-4) was tagged with the loss in surrendering eight runs in 1.1 innings worked.
Game Two
The Hawks jumped out to a four-run lead in the opening inning on the grand slam from Remi Ferguson.
SCSU got a run back in the third inning on Emmans' RBI single.
The program plated a pair of runs in the sixth inning to get to with a run of the lead, 4-3.
SCSU fought all the way back to get the win in the bottom of the seventh inning. Keating had a lead-off single and moved to second as Bowlin walked. Emmans was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jacobs reached on an error to score Keating and tie the game at four all. Thomsen won the game with her single to score Bowlin.
Alex DeVaney (0-3) took the loss for QU with five runs allowed (two earned) in six innings.
Next, the Huskies open conference play at home with a 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. doubleheader against Minnesota Duluth on Tuesday, March 27.
